On Monday, 11th August 2024, the students of Grade 9 undertook an insightful educational visit to the Muktangan Rehabilitation Centre, Pune, as part of the Life Skills Orientation Programme. The objective of the visit was to create awareness about the consequences of substance abuse, the journey of recovery, and the importance of making informed and responsible life choices.
The session began with a PowerPoint presentation conducted by the centre’s counsellor. The talk shed light on the meaning of addiction, its severe impact on individuals and their families, the different types of addictive substances, and the harmful effects of digital addiction caused by excessive screen time. The counsellor emphasized that awareness and self-control are crucial in safeguarding one’s well-being.
To make the learning more engaging, students participated in an interactive activity on the ‘Ripple Effect’. Divided into groups, they were given scenarios related to addiction and risky behaviours. Each group discussed the potential consequences and mapped out how a single decision could set off a chain reaction affecting different aspects of life. Students presented their reflections using chart papers, highlighting the far-reaching impact of choices.
The most impactful moment of the visit came when the students heard a personal account from a recovered addict, who shared his moving story of struggle, recovery, and transformation. His testimony not only highlighted the challenges of addiction but also offered hope and inspiration, showing how determination and support from organizations like Muktangan can help rebuild lives.
The visit proved to be a deeply enriching experience, offering students valuable insights into the dangers of addiction, the power of resilience, and the importance of empathy towards those on the path to recovery. Above all, it reinforced the message that informed choices today shape a healthier tomorrow.
