Beyond the Pages: Why Author Visits Matter at The Orchid School

A book can spark a child’s imagination. Meeting the person who wrote it can deepen that curiosity, opening up conversations about where ideas come from, how stories take shape and why different voices matter.

At The Orchid School, our “Meet-the-Author” initiative creates meaningful opportunities for students to connect with writers and explore the journey behind a book. It reflects our belief that learning grows through interaction, questioning and experiences beyond the classroom.

Building a lasting relationship with reading

Author interactions help children see books as invitations to explore. Discovering a writer’s inspirations and experiences encourages students to engage with different genres and perspectives, and to read beyond prescribed texts. Our purpose is to nurture reading as an enjoyable habit that continues throughout life.

Giving curiosity a voice

These sessions create space for students to ask questions, listen actively and share their viewpoints. Conversations about books and ideas encourage them to think critically, consider different interpretations and express themselves with confidence. Their questions become an important part of the learning experience.

Inspiring young creators

Understanding how an idea develops into a literary work makes the creative process more accessible. An author’s writing journey can encourage children to explore storytelling, experiment with language and recognise that their own observations and experiences can inspire something worth sharing.

Making every interaction meaningful

Each visit is planned around the age, interests and developmental needs of the learner group. The academic and library teams connect the author’s work with relevant curriculum themes and school values. Introducing students to selected books, excerpts or other suitable resources beforehand helps them participate thoughtfully.

Aligned with our vision of “Locally Rooted Globally Competent Education,” author visits build a bridge between books and lived experiences. Through these encounters, we aim to nurture curious readers, thoughtful questioners and confident young voices.
